Introduction to Above Mail

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to connect to your Above Email address. Your @above.im email comes with 2GB of storage and is accessible on both desktop and mobile devices. Emails are permanently deleted when removed, and system logs are automatically erased every 48 hours, ensuring a private and secure email experience.

While your email is hosted on a secure server, messages sent to Big Tech platforms may still be subject to surveillance. For maximum confidentiality, we recommend that your contacts also use Above Email, or that you communicate through an end-to-end encrypted messaging platform such as XMPP.



Setting up K-9 Mail (Automatic Configuration)

Manual setup is no longer required. Simply enter your Above Email address (example@above.im) and K-9 Mail will automatically detect and apply the correct settings for you. In the event that this feature doesn’t work, you can use the manual configuration option guide below.

  1. Opening K-9 Mail App for the first time

    Open the K-9 Mail app and tap START on the welcome screen.

  2. In the email address field, enter your Above Email address in the following format: example@above.im

  3. Tap NEXT to proceed.

  4. Enter your Above Privacy Suite password and tap NEXT once again.

  5. K-9 Mail will ask you to set a name for your account. This name will be visible to your email recipients when you send messages.

    Next, K-9 Mail lets you choose how often it checks for new emails in the background.
    If you're unsure, leave it on the default setting—you can change it later at any time in the app’s settings.

  7. K-9 Mail will now request a few permissions. We recommend enabling them for the best experience.




Confirm everything is working:

  1. Tap the ☰ menu icon in the upper-left corner of K-9 Mail.

  2. You should see all your emAbove Mailail folders (Inbox, Sent, Drafts, etc.).

  3. If your folders appear, your Above Email account is successfully set up in K-9 Mail.

  4. To manually refresh folders, simply swipe down from the top of the screen.



Setting up K-9 Mail (Manual Setup)

Most of the time, K-9 Mail will automatically detect the correct settings for your Above Suite email. However, if automatic setup doesn’t work, you can easily configure your account manually. Follow the steps below to complete the setup if the app is unable to detect the settings on its own.

    Open the K-9 Mail app and tap “Get Started”.

  2. Enter your @above.im email address in the text field.

  3. Tap NEXT to continue.

  4. Wait while the app attempts to automatically detect your email configuration.

  5. If you see a “Configuration not found” error, don’t worry. Just tap NEXT again to proceed with manual setup.

    Configure Incoming Mail Settings
    Fill out the page with the following information:

    • Server: mail.above.im

    • Security: SSL/TLS

    • Port: 993

    • Username: example@above.im

    • Password: your Above Suite password

  2. Tap NEXT to proceed.

  3. Wait while the system verifies your incoming mail settings.

  4. Configure Outgoing Mail Settings
    Enter the following information:

    • Server: mail.above.im

    • Security: StartTLS

    • Port: 587

  5. Tap NEXT to continue.

  6. Customize the Display settings to your preferences.

    Once you’ve set your Display Settings preferences, tap NEXT

  2. Leave the Sync Options at their default settings unless you have specific preferences.

  3. Wait for the app to finish setting up your account.

  4. When prompted, tap Allow next to Contacts to grant permission.

  5. Then tap “Allow” next to Notifications to enable notification access.

    When you tap Allow for both Contacts and Notifications, a system popup will appear for each. Make sure to tap Allow on both popups to grant the necessary permissions.

  2. Once permissions are enabled, tap NEXT to proceed.

  3. You’ll be redirected to your inbox—this will likely be empty if you're setting up the account for the first time.

  4. Tap the ☰ menu icon in the top-left corner of K-9 Mail. If you see your email folders (Inbox, Sent, Drafts, etc.), your Above Email account has been successfully set up.
