As an additional privacy feature to the Above Mail service we provide along with Above Suite, we also set up AnonMail to allow users to set up unlimited Email aliases. These are basically unique ‘sub-Email addresses’ that will all funnel back to the main Email account when receiving Emails.

Why would I want to use Email aliases?

Email addresses are data points that can be used to track and identify users across different services on the web.

Every time you give out a specific Email address, it can act as an identifier and data can be associated with it. When giving out the same Email address to spying eyes, this becomes a privacy issue.

Also, in terms of security - if login data is compromised and Email accounts along with passwords (or other assets) are exposed, this information can be used by cyber criminals to gain access to accounts with the same data.

Another good reason for Email aliases is Spam, which is an issue that has been riddling Email users almost since its inception. By creating Email aliases and handing out Email addresses to specific sites, it will allow to track down where a specific Spam campaign originated from.

Email aliases can also be ‘burned’, allowing to stop an endless stream of Spam Emails.

This is where AnonMail comes in.

Rather than handing out your actual Email address to anybody, start creating unique Email addresses to protect yourself from Spam, tracking & security issues.

Please note:

Our Email alias service is not able to be used for sending Emails.

These Email aliases can only receive Emails and funnel them back to your primary Email account without exposing it.

Log in to AnonMail

Managing Email aliases is done directly on the dedicated website, which you can access any device with a modern web browser.

Here is the website URL:

Creating an Email Alias

  1. Click on the purple button labeled Create New Alias towards the top right.

This will open a new screen allowing to specify this new alias we’re about to create.

you can create a random Alias or fill in a customized address

you can create a random Alias or fill in a customized address

  1. In the Alias Type section you can define the actual Alias Email address that is going to be generated. Aside from generating a random address, you can also customize it.
Note that it will still have a random number added to it.

  2. In the Label section you can fill in some information that will help you identify it in the future. Feel free to put in the website name of where you’re planning to use this Email alias for.

  3. Once you’re happy with your account and the label, go ahead and click on Create Alias to generate it.

And that’s it already - this new Email Alias has been created and can already be used!

The address that was generated in our example is cosmic-ocean-81@above.im

Any new Email that is sent to this address will ‘siphon’ back to the primary Above Mail address (e.g. to aboveuser@above.im)

Using Email Aliases

Whenever a website asks your for your Email, consider which address you want to give them. To use an Email alias, just fill in that unique address.

In our example here we put in this newly generated Email to create a new account on ebay.

After signing up, the confirmation Email came through to the primary Above Mail address (aboveuser@above.im).

As we can see in the screenshot, the Email from ebay came right through

The dashboard on AnonMail is useful to keep track of your different Email aliases.

It also allows to Pause them, making them inactive until reactivated.

If an Email Alias is not useful for you anymore or has been identified to only receive spam, you can decide to Delete it altogether.

Again, please note that these Email aliases can not be used to send Emails!

If you reply to an Email it will be sent from your actual primary Above Mail address instead.
