Exporting Google calendars
It is possible to export calendars that are synced to a Google account by directly logging in to the account through a web browser: https://calendar.google.com/
These steps might be easier from a computer - but you can absolutely do them from the phone via the web browser, like Vanadium. Note that you can change the view inside Vanadium by tapping on the ⋮ three dots top right > Desktop site
Once you’re logged in to your account, you should see the different calendars on the left hand side bar under ‘My calendars’
Mouse-over one of the calendars to reveal ⋮ three dots and click them.
A small box should pop up - click on Settings and sharing
This should take you to another page with a button to Export calendar - click here
This will prompt a download and all events of that calendar will be saved into a single .ics file.
This file con now be imported to another calendar. Here is our guide to import it on the Above Phone via Fossify Calendar.
into DAVx5
Note that once these events can also be imported to other online (synced) calendars. On the Above Phone you may first want to set up those calendars via DAVx⁵ and enable them in Fossify Calendar.
Syncing Google calendars
Privacy disclaimer:
It is possible to keep using your synced address books and calendars provided by Google, even when you keep your phone 'de-googled' otherwise. Please consider the implications of you providing sensitive data to a big tech giant like Google.
Consider exporting Google calendars instead.
Note that it is also possible to have contacts / calendars synced in more private ways by using decentralized & open source solutions, like CardDAV and CalDAV. We provide this service to subscribers of Above Suite.
You can use the following guide to setup a connection to your synced calendars provided by Google. You can also opt to then migrate your data directly onto your phone device or onto a different platform that can offer you syncing.
Step 1: Set up DAVx5
Open DAVx5 from your phone - if you don't have the app installed, you can get it via F-Droid.
Open DAVx5.
If this is the first time you're opening the app, it will ask you to set up the required permissions for it
> on 'Tasks support' you can select 'I don't need task support'tasks support is integrated into the Fossify Calendar apps (green calendar icon)
On the Permissions screen, be sure to check all the sliders.
On the first one 'Keep permissions' it will forward you to the App info page of DAVx5 and toggle OFF 'Manage app if unused'
> on 'Regular sync intervals', you can toggle on the slider and allow DAVx5 to run in the background. This will ensure seamless syncing.
Step 2: Add the account:
Tap the green + button towards the bottom right to add a new account.
Choose "Google Contacts / Calendar" as the login method.
Enter your Google account email address.
Tap Sign in with Google and follow the OAuth authentication process.
Proceed to log in when forwarded to the website and allow the required permission when prompted.
Once back in the DAVx5 app, tap Finish at the bottom left to complete the integration of your Google account.
Step 3: Configure DAVx5
Sync your Calendars:
With the account integrated, select the calendars you want to sync. Tap on the slider to turn them on (flipped to the right)
In the CalDAV tab, be sure to enable your calendar (or multiple ones).
Then tap on the Synchronize now button towards the bottom right to manually initiate syncing.
Step 4: Verify the results
Open your Calendar app:
Note: nowadays we recommend to use Fossify Calendar, which has a green icon. If you don't have it installed, you can download it via F-Droid.
Open Fossify Calendar
Tap on the⋮three dots top right or Settings ⚙ gear icon
In the Settings, scroll down and activate CalDAV sync
Allow the calendar permission if prompted
Enable the calendars listed by checking the boxes
You should now see a new calendar towards the bottom inside the calendar app.
Toggle it to make the events from there visible and invisible in the current view.
That’s - your Google calendar is now integrated to the Calendar app, and the syncing is taken care of by DAVx5.
You could now also export your events and then import them into a different calendar.
