*Syncthing* is a server-less syncing solution and allows to sync specific folders and files between devices without the use of a server! It exists for any major platform out there, including Linux systems, macOS, iOS & Windows. *Syncthing* can be used e.g. to continuously synchronize photos from a phone to a computer (or to another phone), or to remotely sync a KeePass database between your devices.

**Note:** For Android devices, we recommend [*Syncthing-Fork*](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.github.catfriend1.syncthingfork/) found on F-Droid. In the next example we'll show you the general process of how to synchronize the photos and a KeePass database file from the phone to the computer.

### **__Step 1: Install *Syncthing* across your devices__**

Be sure to install *Syncthing* on each device you want to sync data with. For computer systems: [https://syncthing.net/downloads/ ](https://syncthing.net/downloads/)

• For Android: install [*Syncthing-Fork*](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.github.catfriend1.syncthingfork/) from F-Droid to ensure you're using the open-source version.

• For iOS, there is [Möbius Sync](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/m%C3%B6bius-sync/id1539203216), which can interact with *Syncthing* devices

**Note:** If you bought your Above Phone in 2025 or later, you should already have *Syncthing-Fork* installed by default.

### **__Step 2: Set Up *Syncthing-Fork*__**

**• Open *Syncthing-Fork*:** Launch the *Syncthing-Fork* app on your device.

![Opening syncthing fork for the first time](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy8zMGQwNTNiZi01YmRmLTRmMWMtODM2OC1lNjY0ZmYwMDgyNmYvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.WNMssKthLzaL6WvB8DpHvfsY-R4mfIEW_zb8Ye7zGFw " =228x506")

  • **Grant Permissions:**
Allow the app to access your storage and files as prompted. Note: This permission is absolutely safe to grant, since *Syncthing* does not connect to any servers on the internet.

 ![Allowing access to files](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy9jZWQ4NTI5NC1kMzY5LTQyNGYtYjM2YS0zNzgzZGRmMmUyNmYvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.4kUQs8LvWM8SrYQRj0AHAUEXe6PC8ToxF25uO1UIb_I " =228x504")
*Syncthing-Fork* will need access to your storage - or at the very least to the files and folders that you want to sync. You can either give it permission to all of your files (this is safe with *Syncthing*) or use the Storage scope feature and specify the folder you'd want to sync.

![This permission is safe to grant - Syncthing will never spy on you](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy9kODAxZTIxMy1kMDg1LTQ1NDItYWM2MS1jMDM2ZjFjMjUyNjkvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.69sNluReCX8qaWpyEmvJRSRhH529gl7OS6cC-liIBsE " =228x506")

For *Syncthing-Fork* to be able to sync in the background it will need the extra privilege of being able run in the background. Here it depends on whether you want to *Syncthing* to be able to start automatically and run in the background.

Note that this may affect your battery life.

Also note that you can still define the *'Run conditions'* at a later point.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy9jZWJmMmFlMi01YjU0LTQwMGItYTg2OC1lYjdmNDZmZDc4NTMvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.plb1m1uO4NWOXjZOT6it9ZDZtuqabzUlzE2SYlETvUw " =228x506")

*Syncthing* can be setup to automatically started based on your location. This feature can be used so that you can have your devices sync automatically once you’re at home and connected to your own WiFi, for example.
This is optional and can also be skipped.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy9jNDM5NjAwNC04ZTE3LTRjMzEtYTYzYy0zYzMwMjMzYjYxNDgvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.tHUeFGUfMAeBpsur1Fgj-psGuACCYPaIGykoEjWoNZI " =228x506")

Finally, *Syncthing* will ask for **notification permission**, which will just allow the app to show you things in the notification section. We recommend to enable this, since those notifications can be crucial - once you see what these notifications are and what they show you, you could still decide to disable them.

 ![Be sure to enable notifications](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy81MWRlM2NmYy0wMTIzLTRhMzMtYTk2MC0yMGVlMDRhYjRhY2UvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.TFdD3GkicZlzzvgU4Q0nkk4RQRIo-Fzszkz0Ovnckfs " =228x504")

**__Step 3: Configure *Syncthing-Fork*__**

Once through the initial setup of permissions, you'd see a screen similar to this on your phone:

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy83ZjI0ZmZiMS0xZjhmLTQ3OWUtYWMzMy02MTJkOTNiODk1YmQvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.3Xwxud4LfE3hw1td32AibBFE-Ja2FwiG-xQx50qiBw4 " =266x589")

Note the tabs on the top:

**1- FOLDERS** - this is where you can see and configure the folders that *Syncthing* is monitoring and syncing when needed

**2- DEVICES** - this is where you can see and configure the devices that are paired

**3- STATUS** - this is where you can see the current state of your *Syncthing* instance and change the '*Run conditions*'

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy85OTUxZDI5Mi0zYTRhLTQ3OTQtODBlMS1iMjAwNzg3MDg2NmUvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.08pNdfsqZ0v5CyBYOaK32eUI_U9OewAvnV8Jg9UAcDw " =266x590")

  **• Find your Device ID:**

*Syncthing* will automatically generate a Device ID for your device. Note this ID for connecting with other devices. It's a long string of capital letters, but it can also be displayed by a QR code for easier use.

Tap on the three lines top left to get to the sidebar menu.

![Device ID can be accessed via sidebar](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy8zMDYyOTAzYi0wNDlmLTQwYjQtODFhMC01ZDFiZjhjNWJhOTcvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.zgra6ujmyWpgkml4wW5HpkQ1ejEW3GAq6FqvK8Wum_s " =266x589")

From there you can see your device ID as string of letters and as a QR code. In our example the identifier of first device (Above Phone) starts with *4S7...*

![Device ID shows as string of characters & as QR code](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy9kZTczMzY1OC03ODAwLTQ5NzktOTc5OS02MTAzZTFmYzUxNDQvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.1GqDj3CE_XZMZJzjnePI70VIJ2mClSZv0s2GoSU74kc " =266x593")

**• Add a Folder to Sync:**

Inside the ***FOLDERS*** tab, tap on the *'Add Folder'* icon towards the top right In our example we will create a new folder for a synced KeePass database file (.kdbx)

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy8yMzBkNzJhMi01ODBiLTRkMjQtYWNjMy1mMTM4MDYxOTRhYmUvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.-P7FwdasItwMi-GoHJkWQ98lOq7lnoBliXJCbH45lw0 " =266x593")

• Give this folder name for your own reference.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy8yZmIyNzIwNC0zMTA3LTQ1YjEtOGQ2YS0yYjcwNDI2ZDkxMjYvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.5EVi9hMBaEbkwmCmKR2D7DyTdLN7l6-b1Sz5O6O4wiM " =266x593")

• Next, we'll want to select the folder containing the photos and videos you want to sync.

To do this, tap on ***Directory*** (folder icon) - this will open the file manager and take you to a screen similar to this:

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy9lZWFjN2ZmMC05YzNlLTRmMjYtOTM1Ny00MmM4M2U2ZjU3MjQvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.l-ZtC7_G5kF8Mw8qBAujitskWtb-XHX1nZOTNRA75UI " =266x593")

Look for the horizontal folder tree highlighted in the picture and scroll to the left in there until you get to the root, which is the name of your Pixel phone.

Tap on that.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy9lNmI4NTQxMy1jZGUyLTQ0NTgtYmRiMC0yMzEzZGZmYmJmY2YvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.ZRNPIWAX63AbwJJeypE24N0oykpNmDR1khOvWU4H-dM " =266x593")

Because of Androids security policy, *Syncthing* will not work with every default folder. Easiest might be to create a new folder with the **'Folder +' icon** towards the upper right.

We'll create a new folder for the KeePass database file here and manually copy/move our database file into this folder.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy9kYTkzNThhYi04YjcyLTQ4YzItODIzZC01N2I5YzUzNDY5YTYvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.EXOXYW3kOO8I-h2chuL9QNzez72tpsImYPFKcIfAH2g " =266x593")

In our example we created a folder and named it '*KeePass database*', then we proceeded to move the already existing .kdbx file into that same folder, using the '*Files*' app.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy9lMDU4MDMyZi1lMzJjLTQ1ZmUtODI5ZC02ZTI2OWJkYmI5NWIvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.7qQma--c397cQN6y4GJ-4z62dyIRvxXiY3MSEIAnLqI " =266x593")

Tap on ***USE THIS FOLDER ***Then tap on ***ALLOW ***for the next prompt.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy85NDRiMTUzZS0yNTU5LTRmNzEtYTM0Yi1lMzM2NWVjNmU1NmUvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.zVUDBDR7k36jML-zI7sDTy3lE-nUdl2nHlA9guOGfHk " =266x593")

### **__Step 4: Connect to Another Device__**

**• Add Remote Device:** On the other device, open *Syncthing* and note its Device ID. In our example the identifier of the second device (Above Book) starts with *2FA...*

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy9hOTEyNGIzZC00NDA0LTRjMTUtYTg2YS0zY2I5YmM2YTM0MTIvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.infYanXQ536yEKjymbKt-VjfenFaiJoz2FqLUF1GCpY " =494x504")

Back on your primary device, in the ***DEVICES*** tab - push on *'Add Remote Device'*

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy9lMTNhMjBiZi0yNGJiLTRlZjAtYjkyOS05MTMxYjllMTI5YWIvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.e-9_GLZAUdZ0txeUmdiUfH-RgbIrH7GbzOanefiQ_bw " =266x589")

Then either enter the Device ID of the other device, or scan its QR code from inside *Syncthing-Fork*.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy8zZTI4NzBlMy0xOTYyLTRiYWUtOWFhNS02NDFhZDU2MDM4M2IvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.RAlSVpnSXKJ_BWhbyAqfRSD0nqdhKPOaHQ7ZHClFRqY " =266x590")

Make sure the Device ID is correct.
In our example the second device's identifier starts with *2FA...*

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy9mYjdhNGI1Zi1hYjg2LTQzYjQtOGI0Yy00ZmIwMWQxNmY3ZmEvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.atGPCf4H65UCaP9I0-vcPo8WedbJqGU1ErhFVF6XddQ " =266x588")

**• Share the Folder:** Still inside the *Add Device* screen, enable the folders you'd want to sync with the remote device.

**__Example 1:__ Photos taken from phone**

The next picture shows how to enable the *Android Camera* folder from the *Add Device* screen - this will then sync all photos taken from the phone to the second device.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy81NWY0ZjAwNy02ZDdhLTQ1ZmUtYmVhNy0xMmY1OTdhMmQ0OWMvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.zHYvD2-_eefPttN5nC2c0Iksy1SInezcLtrQt06nmFY " =266x590")

On your second device (Above Book in our example) you'd get a prompt to accept a new device connection.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy9mYmY3NWY4ZC01MTlmLTRiOTQtYWFmOS05MzhiYzZmNGIzYzUvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.7plZXNfbA_SMNzZvl8OfvpG3K0VxnkjpmSUodXeeV84 " =1162x282")

After clicking on *Add Device* verify the Device ID of the first one (*4S7*... in our case)

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy82NzE2ZDk1YS03MmY3LTRiZjQtODM4Yi0yY2ExOWQ1MmZjMDkvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.pd-URDH142q7KtoPwyP30-5rOUlPPoDdX3Tw-rwl8KU " =911x415")

Next you may want to specify where this synced folder is going to be on your second device.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy8wNDQ1NTBkYy04ZmI5LTRiODktOTcwYi05NDRlOWUxYTcxYTkvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.de7d8l0w_0P3Tj2b8Ga58oqhFGj2iifbZexoqUF6agI " =902x635")

In our example it will create a folder called *Android Camera* right in the *Home* directory of the Linux system.

Also, depending on what it is you want to sync, you may want to check the options *Syncthing* can give you in the other tabs: *General / Sharing / File Versioning / Ignore Patterns / Advanced*

Click on **Save** once you're clear with all details here.

**__Example 2:__ KeePass database** Let's do another example with the KeePass database folder we created. From the *Create Folder* screen, we can specify which device to sync our folder to. Note: Your other device already needs to be paired for it to show up here. In our example we'll enable the syncing for *2FA...* which is our second device (Above Book).

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy8xOTEzZmU0MC01MThkLTRhN2UtOTUwMi1iZDVhNDBhNWYzMzIvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.ZUhcVXe2l5dPn9FAyWWCC6fI3hkpjhK4BX_Yo4z8LUs " =266x593")

Another thing to point out is the **Folder Type** - which allows to specify whether it would only __Send changes__ or __Send & Receive__ any changes made from this first device to the second device. This can be useful in different scenarios - for example if you want to backup your files to your second device and then be able to delete / move those on the first device, they would still stay present on the device that is not sending changes of that same folder to the other device.

**__Disclaimer:__** be extra sure that you set this right and in the way you REALLY want - because *Syncthing* will also be **able to delete your files** on the other device. Feel free to  make a test with dummy files / folders first if you're unsure about how it would work.

:::

Now in our example the idea is to be able to access and edit the same KeePass database file (so that it can be accessed with KeePassDX on the Above Phone and KeePassXC on the Above Book). So we'll want the changes to go both ways! After pushing on the checkmark, there will prompt set up a new folder on the second device.

Like shown in Example 1, we'll want to specify the folder path for the *KeePass database* folder, which in our example would just be a new folder with that name inside the *Home* folder of our Linux system.

Click on **Save** and you'll see this new folder connection inside the **FOLDERS** tab of *Syncthing-Fork* on your first device.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy8wYzdhMjk3NC0zZTE4LTQ1NzctYmIyZS00Mzk5YjI5N2U0ZTEvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.SA1z0OUDwk93t_kWszHnS1pCt0EOeJYcwgeaIR56L4s " =266x593")

Once connected, you'd see the second device listed on your first one inside the **DEVICES** tab of *Syncthing*.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy8wYTJhMzg3OC05MzAwLTQ0OTUtYTlhOC1jZjUzYzcwZDUzN2UvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.bGTQCu9CaC4WxZVkwNGJjZrsB5pLmBJNyFqhk2BdRGU " =266x593")

Now with everything set up, let's start syncing!

### **__Step 5: Start Syncing__**

**• Syncing Begins:** If the *'Run conditions'* are met, *Syncthing* will automatically start syncing the selected folder between devices. You can monitor the syncing progress in the app.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy8wMGI5OTJmOS1iMWYwLTQxZTMtOWUzMi00OTJkNzBhMDFhZmMvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.WrvibrPXt-eWC7GNUCYP407bFl40CP5lCsJwnFA9c20 " =443x988")

**Note:** *Syncthing-Fork* allows you to define *'Run conditions'*. Be sure to check these and that your device is in the right state for syncing to start.

### **__Step 6: Check Sync Status__**

**• Monitor Sync Status:** Check the status of your sync in the *Syncthing* interface, where you can see transfer progress and file status. On the computer you'd see the folders and devices you set up and the state of connection / synchronization with them.

 ![](https://learn.above.im/api/files.get?sig=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJrZXkiOiJ1cGxvYWRzLzhhY2JlZmVhLTE3OWEtNDczYi1hZjNhLTM1ZDIwYjRlMGEwYy85NmUwZGZjNi1jZDUwLTRkNzgtOGZjMS0yZjMzODU1ZTU3ZWYvaW1hZ2UucG5nIiwidHlwZSI6ImF0dGFjaG1lbnQiLCJpYXQiOjE3OTI5NjExMDAsImV4cCI6MTc5MzA0NzUwMH0.PdCCo9pemT2ueUgffI8RIdrypJKd5PweEGFPyu385FE " =1170x546")

### **__Additional Tips__**

• **No transfer limits:** *Syncthing* comes without any boundries - you can sync and share as many files and folders as your storage can hold! Note that you can set up remote connections with other people too.

• In order for the syncing process to start, **both devices need to be online at the same time** (or connected to the same local / WiFi network) and the app must be running on both devices respectively.

• **Wi-Fi Connection:** For larger files, ensure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network for faster transfers.

• **Privacy**: *Syncthing* syncs files directly between devices without storing them in the cloud, enhancing privacy.

• **Settings**: Explore the app settings to adjust sync frequency and other preferences.

• [*Syncthing-Fork*](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.github.catfriend1.syncthingandroid/) offers you some useful extra features in the **STATUS tab** to check and specify the run conditions.
