This video shows various examples of how to approach specific apps that are in a separate user profile and require a phone number to log in require either Google Play services to be installed, or what to do when the sandbox hardening of GrapheneOS interferes with an apps functionality.

Please note: This video is not intended as a guide to follow, bur rather to showcase different types of apps and what can be done to be able to get them to work.

Some challenges that we may face with apps:

  • apps broken by GrapheneOS's sandbox hardening

  • apps requiring Google Play services

  • apps requiring logging in (to a Google account)

  • apps requiring to log in via code sent to a phone number (or Email)

  • apps requiring to open a link to authenticate from the same profile the app is installed in

Timestamps:

0:00 Quickly switch profiles (via quick settings button)

0:25 Install apps (via Aurora Store)

1:10 example 1: install Uber

2:30 example 2: install RBC (banking app)

3:15 Check app compatibility for RBC (banking app)

3:30 Manage app compatibility

3:50 enable 'Exploit protection compatibility mode (disable GrapheneOS's sandbox hardening)

4:30 Login to apps requiring phone numbers (that are set up in a separate user)

6:15 Notification forwarding from separate user

8:20 Change name or picture of user profile

8:45 Creating 3rd user

10:35 Check app compatibility (ex. Blablacar)
-- Result: app doesn't work, says it is missing Google Play services

10:55 workaround - use web browser to access a service instead of app

11:45 Installing Google Play

13:00 Strategy for apps requiring Google

14:25 Initialize Google (without signing in)

14:55 Check app compatibility with Google Play services installed (ex. Blablacar)
-- Result: app works as expected

15:20 Check app compatibility (ex. Braintap)
-- Result: app doesn't work, says it's missing Google Play services

15:55 Installing Google Play

17:00 Check app compatibility with Google Play services installed (ex. Braintap)
-- Result: app moves forward, but forces user to log in to a Google account

18:05 Change name or picture of user profile

18:45 Delete user profile

Topics covered here:

  • Setting up an app in a separate user profile, that requires a phone number login

  • Getting notifications of apps in separate user profiles

  • Get apps working that require Google Play services

  • Get apps working by lowering GrapheneOS' sandbox hardening
